When I learned that my dear friend and fellow mom Kara was writing a children’s book I was so excited for her. We’ve know each other since our kids’ preschool days so I’ve had the opportunity to know what a truly creative person she is. We started discussing ideas for her book launch event back in January and it’s been so much fun watching her story come to life.
The book is called “A New Leash on Life” and tells the story of Smokey, a dog struggling to adjust to his new place in the family after the arrival of a new baby. Based on Kara’s real life experience, it’s a great message for families plus a wonderful tool to help children learn about kindness and safety around animals. You can even purchase the book on Amazon. That’s making it big time!
When Kara and I began brainstorming for this event we went to Pinterest (where else??) and saw so many clever ideas from book themed parties and dog themed parties.
Taking my inspiration from the book’s illustrations, I chose a color palette of robin’s egg blue, light brown, black, white and grey with lots of paw print accents. I purchased ribbon and balloons featuring paw print designs that added a lot of whimsy to the party.
Since the star of the book is Smokey, based on Kara’s actual pet, I really wanted to find a stuffed animal that looked like the book’s illustrations. One picture in the book shows Smokey giving advice in front of a chalkboard while wearing a graduation cap. I knew I could recreate this scene and have it be the centerpiece of the party decorations. I found the plush toy online and made a little hat out of black cardstock and embroidery floss.
It was an amazing event. Kara did a reading plus signed copies of the book for all the kids. There was a fun art activity with coloring sheets based on Alexandria Gold’s illustrations. Human and four-legged volunteers from the local Humane Society gave a demonstration on dog safety and care. The expressions on the kids’ and dogs faces were priceless! In additional to all the activities, guests mingled and enjoyed wrap sandwiches and a fresh veggie assortment with basil dip.
One of the best parts of my job is helping amazing people celebrate their special occasions. I was truly honored to be a part of such a noteworthy day for Kara, her friends and family. Remember…every day is a chance to have a party!
