Read on for some surprising – and mouth watering – ideas to try at your next party.

Both of my daughters have Fall birthdays a couple weeks apart, so at this time of year I find myself a bit obsessed with cakes – endless searches on Pinterest, tearing pages from magazines. Not to mention getting “artistic direction” from the birthday girls themselves. That’s how I decided to dedicate a whole week to cakes on the blog. Each day we’ll focus on a different cake trend as well as chatting about easy embellishments, creative shortcuts and fun style tips. Let’s get started!

I had the chance to sample a savory sandwich cake when a co-worker made one for an office party and it was sooo good. This is a fun and unexpected twist on traditional tea sandwiches – perfect to try at a luncheon or baby shower.

A candy cake is a birthday cake and gift all in one! This simple style is so easy to personalize for the guest of honor. The trick is to use floral foam or styrofoam as your base. I’m amazed at the details on this example – it would be scrumdiddlyumptious for a Willy Wonka themed party.

This might look like a standard tiered cake but it’s not quite what you think. Those layers are actually wheels of cheese! This type of cake is new trend that is gaining popularity, especially at rustic inspired weddings. Take a peek at more pics from this beautiful wedding over at Style Me Pretty.

A donut cake makes such an impressive display but couldn’t be easier to assemble. Simply stack donuts into a tower and add a couple decorative touches. Imagine how pretty one of these would be at a brunch or donut themed birthday party.

Today, I’ve saved the best for last. If you follow me on instagram you know Pizza Party Friday is a big deal at our house. How amazing would a combo of pizza and cake be?! This recipe from I Wash You Dry shows us how to make those dreams come true. I know I’ll be fantasizing about this one for a long time.
